Stress-free packing tips for moving

Packing your home up to move is a time-consuming, and sometime stressful, job.  Movers Man and Van have been kind enough to share some of their top tips with us, to help you achieve a stress-free move:

If you have to pack for a long vacation, that certainly has its difficulties. Packing for a whole move to a new location however can take on a whole new level. You will need to collect boxes a good long time before the move begins, so check with supermarkets and other stores for free ones. You should do your best to cover your furniture and protect it from damage with materials such as plastic wrap, table cloths or sheets or bubble wrap. Make sure you pack early. The following tips aim to help you along as you prepare for the big day:

·         Gather up supplies and boxes of different sizes. You will definitely need them so you can accommodate the different needs you will experience. You should ensure you pick good materials and strong boxes. You will also need padding, bubble wrap, wrapping sheets as well as packing tape, scissors and other materials. Labeling stickers and marking pens will also do a great job in the process of packing.

·         Create a “packing station” in your home. Open up some space in one of your rooms and turn it into a focal point for all your packing needs. You must wrap items individually with enough layers to get things well protected. You must put them inside their boxes in careful positions so nothing can get hurt. All the heavy items should be placed at the bottom of the boxes of your choosing. Make sure you avoid placing too many heavy items in large boxes as they will easily break and only serve to damage whatever it is you plan on packing. Make sure you place those items in smaller, stronger boxes so you can make them more manageable. Fragile items will need to be handled with care, wrapping them with bubble wrap and providing them with sufficient padding. If all else fails, simply use newspapers and other paper to fill the empty parts of your boxes.

 ·         Prepare a box with basic supplies and belongings you need to open first. This will most likely have items in it that you will use right away or have been using until the very last moment. Soap, sponges, paper towels, scissors, pens, plastic plates and utensils, bottle openers and towels, knives and so forth. All of these items will be necessary on the first day if not the first few hours after you arrive, so keep that in mind and work on it. If you feel like it, you can also add in some sweets so you'll have a chance to enjoy them when you arrive.

·         Prepare a suitcase of alternately a box for each individual family members well ahead of time. They must include most of their personal belongings, such as personal hygiene items, towels, relaxed wear and at least two changes of clothes for the first days spent in your new home. These will be easy to move and use so they are necessary. Take them along with you as luggage in your car instead of letting the moving company handle them for you.
