Friends are key to a happy retirement
A new report by a retirement property developer has revealed that good friends are key to a happy retirement.
Of the 1,673 respondents, 78% said finding new companions
was important to them. This is perhaps
not surprising when you consider that one third of those who participated in
the research lived alone; a growing trend in the over 55s.
So why is the single life a growing trend for retirees?
According to Mintel’s 2013 Single Lifestyles study, divorce
rates amongst the over-65s have risen dramatically over the past few decades. Increased social acceptance of divorce
amongst the over 50s and greater life expectancy mean that people are viewing
retirement as a new life stage, and thinking very carefully about how, and with
whom, they want to spend the next phase of their lives.
Patrick Chambers, Sales Director at Quick Move Properties -
the UK’s leading property part exchange company – commented: “We work a lot
with people of retirement age; singles and couples, who are looking to downsize
and move to be part of a community of like-minded people. Whether they’re interested in moving to a
retirement village, a residential park specifically for the over 50s or over
55s, or just a geographical area that has a certain demographic, retirement can
be a time to build new friendships, pursue new interests and build an active
social life. Many of our customers are
keen to live in a community of other people with similar aspirations and both
the time and resources to pursue that lifestyle.
“Age specific communities are not about retired people being
‘old’ though; retirees do not feel ‘old’ and do not wanted to be treated as if
others consider them to be old. Instead,
retirement is increasingly about lifestyle and freeing up both time and finance
to achieve unfulfilled dreams and aspirations.
Singles and couples alike are keen to increase their social circle, try
new leisure-time activities and enjoy the active social life that a close
community of people of a similar age can offer.”
